The King's Speech

The King's Speech

1) State how costume (as an element of mise-en-scene) makes us as an audience feel an emotion/opinion of/for/about a particular character in the film you have chosen : In the film that I have chosen the costumes show how important the characters are. For example the King wears a very neat, plain and clean suit which shows that he is important compared to the speech therapist who was wearing a patterned suit that wasn't as tidy. The King's suit is also more formal.

2) How is the micro element of sound used in the opening 2 minutes of the film? : In the opening 2 minutes of the film, sound is used to build up tension. There is a score playing and towards the end of the opening 2 minutes there is an element of  diagetic dialogue from a few characters.

3) Apply narative theory to the film you have chosen : In the film the equilibrium is the Duke of York has a stutter and his brother is next in line to be king. The distruption is when he has to make more speeches but can't finish them and his father (the King) dies. The Recognition is he goes to a speech therapist to try and talk without his stutter. The attempt to fix is his brother becomes king and he is getting better at talking without a stutter. The problem is solved as the Duke becomes King and he can talk much better. The new equilibrium is that he makes an amazing speech to the country about the declaration of war from Germany and he can talk with minimal stutter.

4) What genre is the film you have watched? : The King's Speech is a factual based drama. It has he been written around true life events of the Kings but it has elements of drama films such as portraying the journey with a character.

5) How did the film make you feel at the at the end? : At the end of the film I felt informed and entertained. I really enjoyed watching the film and it had quite a lot of information in it that I didn't know before.

6) In your opinion, how could the film have been improved? : In my opinion, to improve the film I think they could have led up to the speech a bit faster as they dragged out the storyline quite a bit, so they could have condensed the running time or added something else in so that viewers had something else to follow in the storyline.
